Anglia in Bloom Results - 12th September

GREAT NEWS!!! GOLD!!!

We are delighted to announce at the Anglia In Bloom awards – Filby scooped a High Gold award.

We were unable to win overall, as it can’t be awarded twice in 2 years. It’s fortunate this principle is not adopted in Tennis or F1 as Federer and Hamilton wouldn’t be have been so successful!

Our ‘Filby Halt Railway Station’ achieved an overall Special Winner Award with a special certificate and beautifully hand crafted wooden plaque.

Our Restaurant ‘The Fabulous Filby Bridge’ adorned with flowers and responsible for raising thousands over the years for the community Achieved a Silver Gilt.

Our Centre of Influence, our Village Hall and Playing Field Won A Gold Award.

Jenny’s vitally important Charity Shed Shop which had donated over £90k to Filby and local communities – far more than any other Bloom Group nationally – was nominated for community project. PLEASE VISIT THIS AND SUPPORT THIS UNIQUE RESOURCE for some incredible bargains!

Our wonderful Churchyard that has been completely uplifted and refurbished mainly at the instigation of Ian Richardson also received a special award.

We would like to thank the Judges for their glowing report and recommendations which we will focus and act on for the future.

We trust you will enjoy the latest images.

Complementary Letters - 3rd September

Hi,

I just wanted to say that driving through Filby always brings a smile to my face, the flowers and displays are beautiful this time of year and at Christmas, I am self-employed and drive all over Norfolk and Suffolk I don’t see any other village or town that puts in the effort like Filby does. So, thank you for making my drives that little bit brighter.

Thank you

Flowers

As we drove home from Hemsby to Hertfordshire this morning, 1st September, we came across your village which was a sight to behold. Absolutely beautiful.  We would be so proud to be residents here. Very well done to everyone involved.

Recycling Corms

During the Autumn approximately 1300 Begonia corms were recovered from the hanging baskets and the beds, given a quick clean up and stored in about 20 trays. These were stacked in the poly tunnel to over winter. Once the plugs were potted-on, the Corms were sorted through and the survivors, potted. The Begonias, placed in one of the small greenhouses, resulted in over 600 plants.

Filby Halt

This year, Britain in Bloom is celebrating 200 years of the modern railway in Britain and Filby’s contribution is the construction of its own ‘Halt’. In practise, the nearest the railway came was the station at nearby Ormesby. It was opened in 1877 and later became part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway route bringing holiday passengers from the Midlands to the Norfolk coastal resorts. It was closed in 1959 along with the rest of the line.

March 2025

Percy Hudson

It is with great sadness that we announce that Percy, one of the founding members of the Filby In Bloom team of volunteers, passed away, on 9th March, aged 93. Percy was, from the very start of “the Bloomers”, a driving force, inspiring & encouraging the team.

By profession, Percy was a carpenter. He designed & built various model structures, some of which are still on display about the village, the windmill at Poplar Drive, the pergolas on the Pound and the date above the bed on the corner of Thrigby Road, which had many add-ons including crowns, and  babies as celebrations of Royal events.

When Percy retired from various posts supporting the Village activities, the Thrigby Road bed was re-named Percy’s Bed in his honour. Percy planned the design of the bed for each year. It takes 1400 plants to fill Percy’s bed.
